Holsteiner Philosophy

Winley Farm brings to America the Holsteiner philosophy of breeding which places primary importance on the quality of the broodmares. In Holstein, for more than 100 years, all mares have been registered according to their quality and bloodlines, producing the athletic and expressive riding horses of today, suitable for jumping, dressage and eventing. We maintain a close relationship with the German Verband, drawing on their experience and knowledge to help us choose suitable stallions for our mares. In this way Winley Farm hopes to produce top quality Holsteiner horses equal to any in the world.

In Europe, mares often have a foal or two while they are fairly young. Then they show to establish performance records. It's a system that gives breeders information about a mare's potential as a broodmare and as a performer. In Europe, mares are retired from competition somewhat earlier. In this country, good mares can be hard to find, as people who have a great mare tend to avoid retiring her, and they are often downgraded to lower levels of competition. The older the mare, the lesser the possibility of bearing a healthy foal.

We want to breed horses with the goal of producing athletes that are both mentally and physically sound which will hopefully raise the quality and availability of good horses in America. Mares with good conformation, good performance records and good pedigrees are essential to that goal.
